Imo State Celebrates 50 Years With Honors for 50 Heroes

Nigeria's Imo State is turning 50, and officials are celebrating by recognizing the people who made their community stronger over the past five decades.

The state government announced plans to honor 50 distinguished individuals during its golden jubilee celebration in February 2026. The recipients include both residents and friends of Imo who contributed significantly to the region's growth.

Commissioner Declan Emelumba shared that the honorees will be revealed on February 4 and receive their awards three days later at the celebration's grand finale. Some awards will be given posthumously to recognize those who have passed.

The festivities kick off February 1 with a thanksgiving service at Dan Anyiam Stadium in the capital city of Owerri. That same day, residents can participate in an online quiz competition about their state's history through the website imo50quiz.ng.

The weeklong party includes something for everyone. A cultural night on February 3 will feature Nollywood comedians and prize giveaways for quiz winners. Governor Hope Uzodimma will break ground on a new Hall of Fame and Archives building to preserve the state's story for future generations.

Sports fans can catch the finals of a zonal football tournament on February 6. The governor also plans a media session where residents can call in with questions and comments.
