India Drops 30 Million Seed Balls by Drone to Revive Forests

Forests in India are getting a high-tech helping hand as drones rain down millions of seeds across land too remote for human planters to reach.

Andhra Pradesh has prepared over 30 million seed balls to restore degraded forests across the state. Officials have already dispersed more than 6.3 million of these across 6,500 hectares, with drones delivering seeds to deep valleys and inaccessible areas for the first time.

The technology solves a problem that has frustrated conservation efforts for decades. Traditional manual planting required workers to trek through difficult terrain, limiting how much land they could cover. Now drones can scatter seeds across nearly 1,000 acres of remote forest land in a fraction of the time.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, who also serves as Forest Minister, has directed the Forest Department to scale up drone operations dramatically. The goal is restoring 30,000 hectares of degraded forests as part of the state's mission to achieve 50 percent green cover.

Most seed balls were still distributed by hand, with workers manually planting 5.9 million across 6,000 hectares. But the drone program targets areas those workers simply couldn't reach safely or efficiently.

The Rajamahendravaram Circle led all regions in seed distribution, followed by Visakhapatnam and Kurnool forest divisions. Officials are now carefully timing dispersal with rainfall patterns and soil moisture to maximize germination rates.

This isn't just about planting trees. Restored forests mean cleaner air, protected watersheds, and habitat for wildlife in one of India's most populous states.

The initiative also demonstrates how conservation can leapfrog traditional methods in developing regions. While wealthy nations debate forest policy, Andhra Pradesh is deploying cutting-edge technology to solve the problem directly.

Officials acknowledge challenges ahead, particularly El Niño-related dry spells that could affect germination. The team is now focused on protecting young saplings to ensure they survive into maturity, turning those 30 million seed balls into 30 million trees.

One state's ambitious combination of traditional wisdom and modern technology is showing what's possible when innovation meets determination.
