India Installs Record 270,000 Solar Rooftops in One Month

India celebrated International Sun Day by hitting a milestone that seemed impossible just a decade ago: installing 270,000 rooftop solar panels in a single month. The April record brings the total to 3 million homes now powered by sunshine under the PM Surya Ghar program, benefiting over 4.5 million households across the country.

The numbers tell a story of incredible momentum. India's total solar capacity now stands at 150 gigawatts, up from just 2.82 gigawatts in 2014. The last 50 gigawatts were added in just 15 months, the fastest expansion in the nation's history.

What makes this even more remarkable is the timing. India originally aimed to get 50 percent of its electricity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, but crossed that threshold this year, well ahead of schedule. The country now ranks third globally in renewable energy capacity.

To mark the achievement, India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy organized the "Run for Sun" marathon at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi. Families and citizens of all ages showed up for the 2-kilometer and 5-kilometer races, turning a policy success into a community celebration.

The rooftop solar program does more than reduce emissions. It puts money back in people's pockets by cutting electricity bills, creates local installation jobs in communities across India, and reduces strain on the national power grid during peak hours.

Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi emphasized that expanding solar access remains the priority, ensuring clean energy benefits reach every household.
