Red Balloon Aerospace launched VISTA, a super-pressure balloon powered by hydrogen, from a stadium in Vijayawada on May 27. The successful flight placed India alongside the United States, France, Japan, and China as the only countries with this indigenous capability.
The startup targets what founder CVS Kiran calls "the forgotten zone" between where aircraft end and satellites begin. This near-space region, sitting 20 to 50 kilometers above Earth, remains largely unused despite offering unique advantages: close enough to be affordable, high enough to provide persistent coverage.
Kiran spent years building space vehicles at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and later served as VP at Skyroot Aerospace. He saw a critical gap in India's space infrastructure: limited testing facilities for payloads bound for orbit, with waitlists that stretched development timelines for months.
Founded in 2025 and based in Andhra Pradesh, Red Balloon designs everything in-house, from ultra-thin envelope films to navigation systems. This vertical integration allowed them to go from starting operations in November to their first flight in under seven months.

The company is building a family of platforms including VISTA balloons, ALTIS tethered aerostats, and HELIX, an autonomous stratospheric airship designed for long-endurance missions. Each platform shares modular components, creating building blocks that work across different applications.
The Ripple Effect
The commercial model makes access surprisingly democratic. Red Balloon uses a rideshare approach where multiple customers can place payloads on a single mission, splitting costs and accelerating innovation.
Applications range from disaster response and remote connectivity to earth observation and communications. International clients have already signed on to fly payloads with the company soon.
The team brings over 70 years of combined experience in lighter-than-air technology. As mission frequency increases, they're adding specialists across technical areas while maintaining their rapid development pace.
Kiran believes India has the engineering talent, capital, and government support needed to lead globally in this category. The challenge now is getting near-space recognized as distinct from both aviation and satellites, so policy and investment can engage with it directly.
The company operates its own facility in Vijayawada and plans to expand as demand grows. Currently bootstrapped, they're preparing a funding round to scale operations.
India's private space industry is entering a broader participation phase, and Red Balloon's early success suggests the near-space domain could become the next frontier for indigenous innovation.
