India: Rent a Mango Tree, Make Water From Air—All Real

Imagine telling someone you rent mango trees for a living, or that you make drinking water from humidity. They'd probably laugh and wait for the punchline.

But across India, entrepreneurs and researchers are turning these seemingly absurd ideas into reality. What sounds like science fiction is actually solving everyday problems for thousands of people.

In Kochi, Umesh Damodaran started with a simple favour. He'd carry premium Alphonso mangoes from Kerala to friends in Bengaluru, until one neighbour asked if they could "get the entire harvest from one tree."

That casual question sparked Rent a Tree, an agri-startup now managing over 250 acres of mango farms across three states. Customers lease a tree for a season (starting around Rs 10,300) and receive 30 to 90 kg of farm-fresh mangoes delivered directly to their homes.

The startup serves 160+ customers, giving farmers upfront income while consumers enjoy naturally ripened fruit without chemicals or middlemen. What sounds whimsical is actually fixing a broken supply chain.

Meanwhile in Kolkata, Navkaran Singh Bagga looked up instead of down to solve water scarcity. His company Akvo Atmospheric Water Systems creates drinking water directly from air using condensation technology, the same principle that puts droplets on a cold glass.

Since launching in 2018, Akvo has installed 2,000+ systems across 15 countries, generating over 100 million litres without touching groundwater. The machines pull in humid air, cool it to create condensation, then purify and mineralise it into safe drinking water.

Hospitals, industries, and communities from Mumbai to the UAE now use Akvo's systems, reducing dependence on water tankers and bottled supply. Science fiction became science fact.

At NIT Rourkela, researchers developed biodegradable plastic from fruit seeds, turning agricultural waste into sustainable packaging that breaks down naturally. At IIT Madras, the ThinnAI platform uses AI to train drivers and prevent accidents before they happen, shifting from enforcement to education.
