An Indian semiconductor startup has successfully developed VIHAAN, a made-in-India broadband chip that worked perfectly on the first try. The breakthrough marks a giant leap toward bringing domestic chip production online by 2027.

Chennai-based Aheesa Digital Innovations just pulled off something most chip companies can only dream of: their first chip design worked flawlessly on the very first attempt.

The startup's VIHAAN chip, designed for fiber broadband networks, achieved what's called "first-pass silicon success" on Independence Day this year. In semiconductor terms, that's like hitting a bullseye on your first shot. The company had sent the chip design to manufacturing on Republic Day, making the August success even more symbolic.

VIHAAN uses India's own VEGA microprocessor, making it a truly homegrown solution for broadband networking. The chip is now heading toward full-scale production, targeted for 2027.

This win comes as India's chip design ecosystem is exploding with activity. Companies backed by the government's Design Linked Incentive program have now completed over 30 chip designs and attracted more than $100 million in venture capital funding.

Aheesa itself recently raised 40 crore rupees (about $5 million) from Tamil Nadu's infrastructure fund and private investors. That money is fueling faster product development and helping the company scale up.

Indian Startup's Homegrown Chip Hits Major Milestone

The government is betting big on semiconductors because chip design drives serious value. According to the Ministry of Electronics and IT, chip design contributes up to 50 percent of a semiconductor's total value and accounts for 15 to 35 percent of the cost in electronic products.

The Ripple Effect

India's semiconductor push is creating waves far beyond one successful chip. The government has now provided chip design tools to 455 organizations, including 350 schools and universities and 105 startups.

Through the Chips to Startup program, 71 academic institutions have completed 245 chip designs. That's not just products, it's building the workforce India needs for its semiconductor future.

Other startups are hitting milestones too. Vervesemi Microelectronics succeeded with a motor controller chip, while Netrasemi successfully tested a cutting-edge 12-nanometer vision chip.

The government's newly approved Semicon 2.0 program backs this vision with 1.27 lakh crore rupees (about $15 billion). The goal is creating a complete ecosystem covering chip design, manufacturing, packaging, equipment, materials, research, and skilled workers.

Indian startups are now designing chips for satellites, drones, defense systems, cars, internet devices, AI systems, telecom equipment, and smart meters. That's the foundation for building technology independence from the ground up.

VIHAAN's success proves India can design world-class semiconductors right here at home.
