India's Akshaya Patra Serves 5 Billion School Meals

Five billion meals is hard to wrap your mind around, but that's exactly how many nutritious lunches the Akshaya Patra Foundation has served to Indian schoolchildren over the past 25 years.

President Droupadi Murmu honored the milestone at a special ceremony in New Delhi on Tuesday, praising the organization for feeding hungry students while keeping them in classrooms. The foundation runs school meal programs across India, giving children the nutrition they need to learn and grow.

"Ensuring a secure and bright future for children is a collective responsibility, not just that of the government," President Murmu told attendees at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre. She emphasized that teachers, parents, nonprofits, and businesses must all pitch in to give kids what they need: good food, quality education, healthcare, and safe spaces to grow.

The impact goes far beyond full stomachs. Schools participating in meal programs see better attendance rates, higher enrollment numbers, and students who stay in school longer. Studies show that well-fed children perform better academically and come to class more consistently.

President Murmu connected the foundation's work to India's larger vision of becoming a fully developed nation by 2047. She called children "the architects of the nation's future" and said feeding them today is an investment in India's tomorrow.

The foundation's efforts work hand in hand with government initiatives like the PM POSHAN Scheme and Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, which aim to provide inclusive, quality education for all Indian children by 2030. Together, these programs tackle two barriers to learning at once: hunger and lack of access.

The Ripple Effect

When a child shows up to school with an empty stomach, learning becomes nearly impossible. By removing that barrier, Akshaya Patra doesn't just feed individual students. It strengthens entire communities by creating healthier, better-educated generations who can lift their families and neighbors.

The program shows what's possible when fighting malnutrition and promoting education become shared goals. Over 25 years, countless children who might have dropped out of school stayed in class because a hot meal awaited them each day.
