India's Largest Battery Powers 24/7 Clean Energy in Rajasthan

Imagine running your entire factory on sunshine and wind, even at midnight. That's now reality in Rajasthan, India, where Serentica Renewables just activated a groundbreaking battery system that stores clean energy for use anytime.

The Mumbai-based company flipped the switch on a 200MWh battery storage facility in Bikaner, a city near Pakistan's border that's become India's renewable energy hotspot. This is just the beginning of a massive 1GWh system that will be five times larger when complete.

The technology solves renewable energy's biggest challenge: what happens when the sun sets or wind stops blowing? These giant batteries charge during sunny, windy hours and release power during evenings and calm periods. Industrial customers can now access clean electricity 24/7 without backup generators or coal plants.

Serentica announced in June that the next phase, adding 800MWh of storage capacity, should come online within months. The company already operates over 3.2GW of renewable energy projects, supplying power to mining, chemical, and textile companies across India.

The project represents part of a $10.5 billion investment plan in Rajasthan state alone. American investment firm KKR has backed Serentica with $650 million since 2022, betting big on India's clean energy future.

The Ripple Effect

Rajasthan has become ground zero for India's renewable revolution. The state installed about one-third of all new utility-scale solar panels across India last year, with Bikaner leading the charge.

Other major projects are transforming the region into a 24/7 clean energy powerhouse. Companies are building everything from 1GW solar farms to hybrid solar-battery systems that guarantee power delivery regardless of weather conditions.

The shift matters beyond India's borders. As the world's most populous nation transitions away from fossil fuels, it's proving that developing countries can leapfrog dirty energy and build modern economies on clean power. What works in Rajasthan could become the blueprint for similar communities worldwide.

Early this July, Serentica signed another deal to develop 600MW of firm renewable energy, winning the largest single allocation in a competitive government tender. That project will add even more always-available clean electricity to India's grid.

Large industrial users are driving the transformation by demanding reliable renewable power, showing that going green doesn't mean sacrificing reliability or productivity. The 24/7 clean energy future isn't coming someday; it's already powering factories in the desert.
