India's New Sleeper Train Cuts Travel Time by Six Hours

😊 Feel Good

India's newest Vande Bharat sleeper train will connect Bengaluru and Mumbai, making overnight travel faster and more comfortable. Following the success of the first sleeper route that saves passengers six hours, a dozen more trains are coming by year's end.

Traveling between India's tech hub and financial capital is about to get a whole lot smoother. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw just approved a new Vande Bharat sleeper train connecting Bengaluru and Mumbai, bringing comfortable overnight travel to one of the country's busiest routes.

The semi-high-speed train will run between KSR Bengaluru station and Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Built by BEML using technology from Chennai's Integral Coach Factory, the distinctive orange and grey train will be operated by South Western Railway.

This marks the second sleeper train in India's ambitious Vande Bharat program. The first route launched in January 2026, connecting Howrah and Kamakhya, and the results speak for themselves: travelers are saving up to six hours on their journeys.

Minister Vaishnaw confirmed the approval in an April 5 letter to Bangalore Central MP PC Mohan. The announcement followed discussions about improving public travel convenience between the two major cities.

The Ripple Effect

The timing couldn't be better for India's expanding rail network. Production of these modern sleeper trains has ramped up significantly, with 12 new trains expected to hit the tracks by December 2026.

"12 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains comprising six rakes on each side will be rolled out by the end of 2026," Vaishnaw said earlier this year. That's six complete train sets ready to transform long-distance travel across India.

These aren't just faster trains. They represent a fundamental shift in how millions of Indians will experience overnight journeys, combining the time savings of semi-high-speed rail with the comfort features modern travelers expect.

The expansion signals India's commitment to modernizing its massive railway system, which serves over 8 billion passengers annually. Each new route opens up economic opportunities, connects families, and makes business travel more efficient.

For commuters between Bengaluru and Mumbai, the wait for better overnight options is almost over.
