Injured Bear Cub Luna Thrives After India Forest Rescue

When forest rangers found a tiny bear cub abandoned in India's Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, she was running out of time. Severely dehydrated, underweight, and unable to walk due to injuries on her left leg, the five-month-old sloth bear would have quickly become prey in the wildlife-rich reserve.

The rangers acted fast. They transported the cub to Wildlife SOS's Van Vihar Bear Rescue Facility in Bhopal, where veterinarians named her Luna and got to work saving her life.

Luna's injuries told a painful story. Vets discovered an old hairline fracture near her left hip, likely from a fall that separated her from her mother. She also had a wounded toe, a damaged claw, and an ulcer on her footpad that made every step agonizing.

"When an injured cub is left alone in the wild, every passing hour is critical," said Kartick Satyanarayan, CEO of Wildlife SOS. The nonprofit has been rescuing and rehabilitating distressed wildlife in India since 1995.

Today, Luna is responding beautifully to treatment. Her wounds are cleaned and dressed regularly, and she's eating well and gaining weight. Even better, her playful personality is starting to shine through.

While naturally wary of humans at first, Luna is now forming a trusting bond with her caregiver. The secret weapon? Honey-laden treats that help her associate people with comfort and safety.
