Here's what makes this special. Most hydrogen production today requires two separate systems: solar panels to capture energy, then a machine called an electrolyzer to split water into hydrogen. SunHydrogen combined both jobs into one integrated panel that does everything at once.
When sunlight hits their specially designed semiconductor panels, electrons immediately get to work splitting water molecules. Hydrogen bubbles up on one side, oxygen on the other. No middleman, no extra conversion steps, no bulky equipment needed.
The company has been working with Honda's research division, where their panels achieved 10.8% efficiency in testing. They've also scaled up to larger panels nearly two meters wide that reached 9% efficiency outdoors under real sunlight.
Business Director Tor Erik Hoftun explains that their panels are engineered differently than regular solar cells. Everything inside works together as one hydrogen-generating unit, matching the electrical properties perfectly to the water-splitting chemistry.

The technology still needs support equipment to circulate water and collect the gases safely. But it eliminates the separate electrolyzer stack and much of the power conversion gear that adds cost and complexity to traditional setups.
SunHydrogen just partnered with Australia-based Sparc Hydrogen for a 24-month collaboration. They'll test the panels under concentrated sunlight and evaluate how cheaply they can produce hydrogen at scale. If milestones are met, testing will move to a facility in South Australia.
The next goal is ambitious: pushing efficiency up toward 15% while making larger panels that manufacturers can actually produce commercially. Honda continues working with SunHydrogen on developing these higher-efficiency products.

Clean hydrogen matters because it could replace fossil fuels in industries that are hard to electrify directly, like steelmaking, shipping, and heavy transport. But today's hydrogen production methods are either expensive or carbon-intensive.
