Italy Catches Fake Roman Theater After 10-Year Investigation

A sprawling archaeological fraud in northern Italy has finally been solved, showing how trained experts protect our shared cultural heritage from elaborate fakes.

Franco Malosso, 69, spent years building what looked like an ancient Roman theater on a hillside in Vicenza province. He stacked stone blocks, erected cement columns designed to look old, placed plaster statues around a semicircular arena, and charged visitors up to €40 for tours.

The fake site, called Anfiteatro Berico, even appeared in an official tourist guide. Malosso initially presented it as containing genuine remains from Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Neolithic period.

But in 2016, local officials in Arcugnano grew suspicious and launched an investigation. What they discovered became one of Italy's most astonishing archaeological hoaxes.

Cultural Heritage experts quickly identified the fraud. Professor Jacopo Bonetto from the University of Padua explains that trained archaeologists can spot fakes immediately by examining construction techniques, materials, and location context.

"It is completely absurd to think that an ancient building can be confused with a modern one," Bonetto told reporters. Ancient Roman amphitheaters were built on town outskirts, not randomly in the countryside.

After a 10-year legal process, Italy's Supreme Court confirmed Malosso's sentence: two years and four months in prison for illegal construction and art forgery. He entered Ventimiglia prison earlier this year.
