Japan University Launches 7-Nation Africa Leadership Program

A historic bridge is forming between Japan and Africa, and it's powered by students ready to tackle the world's biggest challenges.

Sophia University in Tokyo launched a new international exchange program in 2025 that connects students with seven partner universities across South Africa, Egypt, Côte d'Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Senegal, and Ghana. The initiative, selected by Japan's Ministry of Education, aims to develop the next generation of global leaders through collaboration between Japanese and African students.

The program breaks new ground for Japanese higher education, which has traditionally focused partnerships on Western countries. Vice President for Global Academic Affairs Professor Mariko Iijima explained that Sophia possesses unique strengths for this mission, including faculty specializing in African studies and an annual "Africa Weeks" event that has run since 2017.

Students participating in the program take courses taught in Japanese, English, and French. Through Collaborative Online International Learning technology, they attend lectures delivered by African professors and discuss solutions with peers across continents in real time.

The curriculum combines three core areas: Japan-Africa Studies, where students learn about each other's regions; International Cooperation Studies, which teaches practical collaboration skills; and Global Environmental Studies, focusing on challenges that affect every corner of the planet. Students must complete coursework in all three fields plus hands-on fieldwork to earn their certificate.

The Ripple Effect spreads far beyond the classroom walls. During spring and summer breaks, students participate in the "Learn from Africa" program, conducting fieldwork and volunteering in partner countries. African international students simultaneously learn about Japan, creating a true exchange of knowledge and culture that benefits both regions.

This collaboration addresses a growing student demand at Sophia, where interest in African studies and exchange programs has steadily increased in recent years. The university consolidated courses previously scattered across different departments into one integrated curriculum, making this expertise accessible to more students than ever before.

Upon completion, graduates receive a digital certificate called an "Open Badge" based on international standards, proving their multilingual skills and cross-cultural leadership abilities to future employers and graduate schools worldwide.

Seven universities across two continents are now united in preparing students to solve problems that respect no borders.
