Jayson Jurado Dives Into Canal, Saves Trapped Driver

Jayson Jurado was at C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines on a Sunday afternoon when he witnessed something terrifying: a car veering off the road and crashing into the canal.

The vehicle belonged to an elderly woman who had lost control. Within moments, her car became completely submerged underwater.

Most people would freeze or wait for help to arrive. Jurado jumped into the canal.

He reached the sinking vehicle and helped pull the driver from the car before police and fire rescue teams arrived at the scene around 1:41 p.m. on May 24. The woman was conscious when first responders took over.

Pembroke Pines fire rescue personnel transported her to Memorial Hospital West. She arrived in stable condition, a outcome that might have been very different without Jurado's intervention.

The police department's dive team later extracted the fully submerged vehicle from the water at the park, located at 900 N. Flamingo Road. Investigators determined the crash appeared to be accidental, with no other occupants in the car.
