Jerusalem Forum Unites Faiths to Build Peace Together

In a city known for ancient divisions, religious leaders are launching something quietly revolutionary: a permanent forum where different faiths work together on peace.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, is launching "Within Your Gates" on September 7, 2026. The forum brings together scholars and practitioners from multiple faith traditions to explore how Jerusalem can fulfill what they call its "universal vocation" for reconciliation.

"The mission of earthly Jerusalem is to become the image and mirror of heavenly Jerusalem," Cardinal Pizzaballa said. He envisions the city as "a prophecy and promise of that universal reconciliation and peace which God desires for the whole human family."

The initiative didn't start in a conference room. It grew from closed conversations Cardinal Pizzaballa began in 2024 in response to ongoing conflicts in the Holy Land. Those early discussions evolved into five workshops over two years, partnering with the University of Notre Dame's Jerusalem campus.

The workshops revealed something important: people from different religious and ethnic backgrounds wanted to keep talking. They recognized the need for a permanent structure to continue building bridges, leading to the creation of Within Your Gates.

The forum will tackle big questions through practical research. Topics include the theological significance of Jerusalem, the language of conflict and reconciliation, and how people can create change even under difficult conditions.

What makes this different is its approach. The forum is rooted in the daily realities of Jerusalem residents while addressing questions that matter far beyond the city walls. Researchers from theology, philosophy, history, political science, architecture, and even literature will collaborate across religious and political lines.

The organizers believe Jerusalem's complexity isn't a barrier to peace. Instead, they see it as a source of wisdom that can inspire the rest of humanity. By working through difficult questions together in one of the world's most contested cities, the forum aims to offer lessons for communities everywhere struggling with division.

Dr. Daniel Schwake will lead the forum's day-to-day operations, with Cardinal Pizzaballa serving as Chair of the Board of Promoters. The launch event will gather the scholars and practitioners who have shaped the initiative from its earliest conversations.
