Johannesburg's Downtown Gets Solar Lights and Clean Streets

Johannesburg's downtown streets are glowing at night, powered entirely by the sun, as an innovative partnership proves that Africa's biggest challenges can spark its brightest solutions.

The Johannesburg Inner City Partnership has installed solar streetlights across more than 12 blocks of the city center, creating safe pathways for the thousands of people who live, work, and shop there. The lights charge during the day and illuminate the streets from dusk to dawn, fitted with anti-tampering technology linked to citywide security cameras.

"You want vibrance. You want people walking around, going to the shops, going to school," says David van Niekerk, CEO of the partnership. His vision of a walkable Johannesburg, once dismissed as unrealistic, is now unfolding block by block.

Main Street showcases the transformation with broadened boulevards, well-maintained pavements, and outdoor cafés where people can linger safely. Street furniture provides spots to rest, while designated hawker stands support the city's essential informal economy.

Gandhi Square, a major transport hub, has become exactly what a big city terminus should be: clean, bustling, and safe. Businesses and the City work together to maintain the space, creating a model for what public transport areas could look like across South Africa.

Public works employees funded by the Expanded Public Works Programme keep streets spotless on regular rotation. The initiative, led by Clean City SA founder Dalu Cele, proves that Johannesburg's notorious litter problem has a solution when the right partnerships come together.

Ernest Oppenheimer Park demonstrates the ripple effects of thoughtful urban planning. Young people now play basketball, chess, and racquetball on custom pitches while barbers and food vendors operate from the perimeter. Schools regularly bring students to use the facilities, reclaiming what could have been another neglected green space.

The transformation shows what becomes possible when city government, civil society organizations, and business funding align behind a shared vision. The partnership model is already inspiring similar initiatives across other Johannesburg neighborhoods, proving that collaboration can overcome bureaucracy and resource constraints.
