Kate Douglass Breaks 50m Freestyle World Record at 23.49s

Kate Douglass just proved that sometimes the best response to losing a record is breaking it again, faster than ever.

The American swimmer rocketed to a stunning 23.49 seconds in the 50m freestyle at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California on Saturday morning. She reclaimed the world record from teammate Gretchen Walsh, who had broken Douglass's previous mark of 23.59 just weeks earlier with a time of 23.55.

What makes this moment even more remarkable? Douglass clocked her record-breaking time barely 12 hours after swimming the second-fastest 100m freestyle in history during a relay race the night before.

"I think barely missing a world record last night kind of fueled me a little bit," Douglass told Swimming World magazine. She touched the wall in 51.69 seconds during that relay, missing the 100m world record by just one one-hundredth of a second.

Yet Douglass believes she can go even faster. "I definitely wasn't expecting that," she said about her 50m world record. "I still think there are things I could clean up."

The friendly rivalry between Douglass and Walsh has pushed both swimmers to extraordinary heights. After Douglass set a world record on June 19, Walsh broke it on June 28. Now Douglass has reclaimed it with an even faster time.

Saturday night's final promises to be electric. Walsh qualified second-fastest in 23.78 seconds, making her the only other swimmer in history to break 24 seconds. Australian Meg Harris rounded out the top three qualifiers at 24.22.
