Wind turbines against blue sky in Kazakhstan renewable energy facility under construction

Kazakhstan Building 7GW of Clean Energy With Global Partners

🤯 Mind Blown

Kazakhstan's sovereign wealth fund is pouring $10 billion into renewable energy projects that create local jobs while fighting climate change. The country is even manufacturing its own wind turbine equipment instead of importing it.

A country once known mainly for oil and uranium is now building massive wind farms and becoming a clean energy manufacturer.

Kazakhstan's Samruk Kazyna fund is investing nearly $10 billion to build 7 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity. That's enough to power millions of homes while helping the nation reach carbon neutrality by 2060.

The fund partnered with global companies like Masdar, Total Energies, and China's Sany Renewables to make it happen. But instead of just buying equipment from abroad, they're building a factory in Kazakhstan that produces wind turbine parts like nacelles and rotor hubs.

"We reconcile two aims," explains Nurlan Zhakupov, who leads the fund. "On one hand, we do business on a fully commercial basis. On the other hand, we make sure this will improve Kazakhstan's environmental situation."

The approach mirrors how the fund has operated for 17 years. Modeled after Singapore's Temasek Fund, Samruk Kazyna takes state owned companies, develops them with strong corporate standards, then often takes them public or privatizes them.

Seven of their companies now trade publicly with a combined market value over $50 billion. Kazatomprom, the world's largest uranium producer, and Air Astana, the national airline, both trade on the London Stock Exchange.

The Ripple Effect

The renewable energy push shows how developing countries can leapfrog older technology. Kazakhstan isn't just buying solar panels and wind turbines. They're creating manufacturing jobs and technical expertise that will serve them for decades.

The wind equipment factory means local workers gain skills in advanced manufacturing. Engineers learn cutting edge renewable technology. Supply chains develop around the new industry.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan is courting over $25 billion in annual foreign investment for 2026 to 2028. The goal is diversifying away from resource extraction toward high value manufacturing and technology.

The renewable energy projects prove sustainability and profit can work together. Partners wouldn't invest billions if the returns weren't there. But the environmental benefits come automatically.

Other resource dependent nations are watching closely to see if Kazakhstan's model of using sovereign wealth to drive green development can work for them too.
