Kenya Launches AI Health Center to Transform Patient Care

The Ministry of Health announced plans this week to establish an AI-in-Health Centre of Excellence at Kenyatta National Hospital, the nation's largest medical facility. The center will train doctors and clinicians to use artificial intelligence for early disease detection and better patient outcomes.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale met with Dr. Akbar Waljee from the University of Michigan Center for Global Health Equity to map out the collaboration. Their focus includes using AI to catch cancer earlier and improve treatment for cardiovascular disease.

The center represents more than just new technology. It's designed to equip Kenyan medical professionals with advanced data science skills that will position the hospital as a regional leader in digital health innovation.

Kenya also proposed joint Centers of Excellence in Cardiovascular Care and Sports Medicine. These specialized facilities aim to transform the country into a regional hub for advanced medical care and medical tourism.

The government plans to leverage international expertise to create a Policy, Innovation, and Reciprocal Learning Institute. This will promote collaboration between developing nations and help shape healthcare policy based on real evidence and shared experiences.

To move quickly, both parties formed a Joint Working Group to develop a detailed roadmap with clear timelines. The framework builds on existing programs, including the $6.5 million Uzima-DS initiative already underway.
