Kenya Slashes Sugar, Flour, and Electricity Prices

Grocery shopping got cheaper for millions of Kenyans last month, bringing welcome relief to household budgets across the country.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics reported that sugar prices fell 4.4 percent in February, dropping to 166 shillings per kilogram from 174 shillings in January. A two-kilogram bag of wheat flour also became more affordable, declining nearly one percent.

Electricity bills shrank too. The cost for 200 kilowatt-hours of power dropped 2.7 percent, saving families money on one of their biggest monthly expenses.

Other essentials joined the downward trend. Mangoes became 3.2 percent cheaper, while fuel prices for petrol, diesel, and kerosene all declined. Even cooking gas prices dropped slightly.

The falling prices helped push Kenya's overall inflation rate down to 4.3 percent from 4.4 percent in January. That might sound like a small change, but for families stretching every shilling, these savings add up quickly.

Not everything got cheaper, though. Irish potatoes and cabbages both increased four percent, while kale prices rose 2.4 percent. Still, the overall trend moved in the right direction for consumers.

The Ripple Effect

When basic necessities become more affordable, the benefits spread far beyond individual shopping carts. Families can redirect savings toward school fees, healthcare, or small business investments. Lower food and fuel costs also help small retailers and restaurants keep their own prices stable, creating a positive cycle throughout local economies.
