Kidnapped Driver Saves Lives Using Secret Igbo Message
When armed kidnappers demanded ransom, Nigerian tricycle driver Dennis Okechi used his native Igbo language to secretly reveal their location to rescuers. His quick thinking led to the successful rescue of both victims from the forest hideout.
A tricycle driver kidnapped in southern Nigeria outsmarted his captors by using his native language to reveal their location during a ransom call, leading to his rescue and that of a fellow captive.
Dennis Okechi and farmer Onyinyechi Ekechukwu were dragged into a forest by six armed men on June 10 while returning from their farm in Abia State's Umuahia North area. The kidnappers demanded 10 million naira (about $6,300) for their release.
When the abductors handed Okechi a phone to contact his family about the ransom, he saw an opportunity. Instead of negotiating in English, he switched to Igbo and told his relatives exactly where the kidnappers were holding them in the Udengwu area.
The kidnappers grew suspicious and angry when they couldn't understand what he was saying. They threatened to shoot him, but the message had already gotten through.

Okechi's family immediately alerted police, who teamed up with local vigilantes, forest guards, and community volunteers for a rescue operation. When the rescue team arrived at the location Okechi had described, the kidnappers fled, abandoning both victims.
The Ripple Effect
This rescue highlights a growing trend in Nigeria where communities are partnering with police to fight kidnapping. The collaboration between security forces and local volunteers is proving effective in responding quickly to abductions.
Deputy Superintendent Maureen Chinaka confirmed that one victim sustained head and hand injuries but both are recovering. Police are still searching for the suspects.
The successful rescue offers hope in a region struggling with increased kidnapping incidents, showing that local knowledge and community action can make a real difference in keeping people safe.
