Korean Singer Yoo Yeol Returns After Life-Saving Lung Transplant

After spending six months in intensive care and weighing just 88 pounds, Korean ballad singer Yoo Yeol is performing again thanks to a lung transplant that saved his life.

The 1980s music icon had battled pulmonary fibrosis for nine years before his condition became critical in May 2023. He was rushed to the hospital with flu symptoms and ended up fighting for his life in the ICU.

"I reached a point where my life was in grave danger," Yoo told viewers on KBS2's "Immortal Songs" on January 24th. His weight plummeted to just 40 kilograms (about 88 pounds) as his lungs failed him.

The ordeal became even more heartbreaking when his mother passed away while he was hospitalized. His wife kept the news from him initially, worried the shock might be too much. "What was especially regrettable was that I couldn't visit her for several months before she passed due to my poor health," Yoo shared, his voice breaking with emotion.

But then came the turning point. In late July 2023, Yoo received a lung transplant from a generous donor. His recovery stunned the medical team caring for him.

"Thankfully, my recovery has been good, and even the hospital was surprised," Yoo said. "I experienced a remarkable miracle that was hard to believe even for myself."

Why This Inspires

During his darkest moments in the hospital, Yoo kept himself going by thinking of his wife and son waiting for him at home. "I thought, 'They are waiting for me ahead,' and walked a little more and mustered my strength," he recalled.

His gratitude toward his donor runs deep. "I cannot express my gratitude to the donor and their family who gave me the lungs," he said, choking up during the broadcast.

Yoo also credited the prayers and support from fans across Korea for helping him push through rehabilitation. Their messages gave him strength when exercise felt impossible and every breath was a struggle.

Now back to doing what he loves, Yoo is living proof that organ donation saves lives and that the human spirit can overcome extraordinary odds with love and support.
