Lagos Youth Football League Kicks Off With 21 Goals

Young footballers in Ajegunle, Lagos are getting a chance to showcase their talents thanks to a new youth league that launched last weekend with explosive action.

The Nathaniel Idowu Foundation U-14 Football League opened at the Nathaniel Idowu Pitch in Ajegunle-Apapa with six matches that delivered 21 goals and plenty of drama. Fortune FC announced their arrival with a commanding 5-0 victory over Divinely Blessed FC, while Strong Dove FC matched that firepower in a 5-1 win against Best of Best FC.

Twelve teams from across Lagos State will compete over the next 11 weeks for substantial cash prizes. The champions will take home 500,000 naira (about $500 USD), with runners-up receiving 300,000 naira and prizes going down to sixth place.

The league emerged from a partnership between the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Sports Council and the Nathaniel Idowu Foundation. Director-General McAnthony Anaelechukwu says the program aims to restore Ajegunle's reputation as a football powerhouse through grassroots development.

After the group stage, the top four teams will advance to a Super 4 playoff to determine the ultimate champion. Beyond bragging rights, players are competing for recognition and the opportunity to advance their football careers.

The Ripple Effect

The impact extends beyond the boys on the pitch. Starting February 7, organizers will launch "Let Her Play," a 10-week girls' development program at New Maracana Stadium.

Secondary school girls will train, compete, and explore pathways to football careers through the initiative. The program runs through April 11 and represents a significant investment in female athletic development in the region.

Ajegunle has long been known as a cradle of Nigerian football talent, producing professional players who've gone on to national and international success. This league taps into that heritage while providing structure, funding, and visibility for the next generation.

The opening weekend results showed competitive balance across the league, with matches ranging from tight 1-1 draws to high-scoring affairs. Pure Talents FC defeated Coal City FC 2-0, Bright Future FC edged Moree Wins FC 2-1, and Sharp Talent FC recorded a 2-0 win over Young 11 FC.

With professional-level organization, real prize money, and genuine opportunities for advancement, these young players are getting more than just weekend games.
