LaGuardia Opens 12 Fast EV Chargers for Ride-Share Drivers
LaGuardia Airport just unveiled New York's largest public fast-charging station with 12 new electric vehicle chargers that can power up cars in just 30 minutes. The station targets ride-share drivers and travelers, making it easier for the over 100,000 EV owners in New York City and Long Island to stay charged at one of America's busiest airports.
Electric vehicle drivers passing through LaGuardia Airport no longer have to worry about running out of juice.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the New York Power Authority just opened the airport's first public fast-charging station. The 12 new high-speed charging units can power compatible electric vehicles in as little as 30 minutes, giving ride-share drivers, taxis, and travelers a reliable place to recharge.
The timing couldn't be better. More than 100,000 electric vehicles currently cruise through Long Island and New York City, and roughly 22 percent of all Uber and Lyft trips in the city now use zero-emission or wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
"These new fast chargers are doing much more than advancing sustainability," said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O'Toole. "They're expanding convenience for the millions of travelers who pass through LaGuardia Airport each year."
The station sits on Runway Drive off the Grand Central Parkway's Exit 7, strategically placed where ride-share drivers frequently work. Experts expect the location to serve more than 100 drivers every single day.

The setup includes some smart features too. To keep lines moving, the station limits charging to 85 percent battery capacity and charges idle fees after sessions end, ensuring everyone gets their turn without long waits.
The Ripple Effect
This charging hub represents the single largest bank of chargers in New York Power Authority's statewide EVolve NY network, bringing the total number of units across the state to 300. That milestone matters because convenient charging access directly impacts how quickly drivers can switch to cleaner vehicles.
The new infrastructure supports New York City's Green Rides Initiative, which requires all Uber and Lyft trips to use either zero-emission or wheelchair-accessible vehicles by 2030. With 13,100 electric vehicles already licensed through the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission, hardworking drivers needed accessible charging right where they work.
"Back in 2023, when we launched the Green Rides Initiative, we emphasized to providers how important it was for our licensees to be able to charge at the airports," said James DiGiovanni, NYC TLC's deputy commissioner. "The Port Authority and NYPA took quick action, and what we celebrate today is a result of that."
The station plugs into the Electrify America network, offering hyper-fast chargers rated up to 350 kilowatts. Drivers can pay easily using a credit card, mobile wallet, or app, removing barriers that might discourage electric vehicle adoption.
This charging station is just one piece of LaGuardia's broader sustainability push, which includes 1,400 electric ground service vehicles and 775 chargers already powering baggage tractors and airplane tows across the Port Authority's three major airports. The agency aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and every charging port brings that goal closer to reality.
