Lexus ES Adds Smart EV Trip Planner After Years of Waiting

Electric car drivers know the anxiety of planning charging stops on long trips, but Lexus just made that worry disappear for its newest sedan.

The 2026 Lexus ES will arrive with Toyota's new Arene software platform, bringing native EV route planning to a Lexus for the first time. This feature has been standard on Teslas and Rivians for years, and its absence has been a major complaint from Toyota and Lexus EV owners.

The system does the thinking for you. It calculates the best route to your destination, automatically adds charging stops along the way, and tells you how much battery you'll have left when you arrive. You can see all of this on the car's navigation screen or through the Lexus smartphone app.

The details go deep. Drivers can view charging station names, addresses, hours, charger types, real-time availability, and maximum power output. One tap shows nearby charging stations, or you can add a charging stop before leaving home.

A conversational voice assistant joins the package too. It handles volume, audio, climate and navigation without requiring memorized commands. The ES also gets a built-in dash cam that records continuously, captures footage manually, and automatically saves video when it detects hard braking or impacts.

The whole infotainment experience got an iPhone-style makeover. Customizable widgets sit on the home screen, functions are easier to find, and the system responds faster than previous versions.

The Ripple Effect

This upgrade matters beyond just one car model. The ES 350e delivers 307 miles of EPA range from its 74.7 kilowatt-hour battery, the same pack used in the Lexus RZ and Toyota bZ4X. Starting at $49,000, the electric ES targets buyers who want premium comfort without the premium brand anxiety.

Toyota will likely roll out the same route planning feature to its other EVs and Subaru's electric models. Whether that happens through over-the-air updates or requires newer model years remains unclear, but the technology now exists within the family.

The arrival of this feature removes a real barrier to EV adoption for luxury buyers who expect their cars to think ahead.
