The team is now working on safety testing before human trials begin. They're refining the control system and planning to use real-time ultrasound imaging to position the strips with even greater accuracy. This targeted approach could reduce complications and costs compared to current treatments.

"Our goal is to provide an effective alternative to existing treatment methods," Magdanz said. "We hope accelerated stone dissolution will relieve the pain faster and help patients pass stones quicker."

Beyond kidney stones, this technology opens doors for treating other urinary conditions with pinpoint accuracy. The same magnetic navigation system could potentially deliver medication or break down other blockages throughout the urinary tract.
