Two battery prototypes displayed at technology conference in Malaysia and Indonesia collaboration

Malaysia and Indonesia Team Up to Build Nusantara Battery

🤯 Mind Blown

Two Southeast Asian nations just unveiled a battery breakthrough that shows what's possible when countries collaborate instead of compete. The Nusantara Battery combines Malaysia's graphene expertise with Indonesia's massive nickel reserves.

Malaysia and Indonesia just proved that collaboration beats competition when it comes to solving the world's energy challenges. The two countries unveiled the Nusantara Battery, a graphene-infused lithium-ion battery that represents the first joint power technology between the two nations.

The prototype was revealed at the 4th ASEAN Battery Technology Conference in Sepang, bringing together the best of both countries. Malaysia contributed its expertise in battery formulation, graphene technology, and cell development through NanoMalaysia Bhd and its subsidiary Gigafactory Malaysia. Indonesia brought its experience in producing NMC active materials, backed by the world's largest nickel reserves.

While the prototypes haven't completed full testing yet, the early signs are promising. A related battery pack using similar technology from Gigafactory Malaysia can power an electric vehicle for up to 640 kilometers and fully charge in just 12 minutes.

The partnership started with a memorandum of understanding signed at this year's conference. The agreement established cooperation in technology transfer, joint research, testing standards, and industrial training between the National Battery Research Institute of Indonesia and Malaysia's team.

The Ripple Effect

This collaboration signals something bigger than just one battery. Dr. Rezal Khairi Ahmad, CEO of NMB Group, explained the vision: no single organization can build a competitive battery industry alone, especially when ASEAN's greatest strength comes from complementing each other's capabilities rather than competing.

The Nusantara Battery project highlights how regional cooperation can build a more integrated and resilient battery supply chain across Southeast Asia. Instead of watching global powers dominate the clean energy transition, ASEAN nations are discovering they can combine their natural resources, technical expertise, and manufacturing capabilities to become major players.

The timing couldn't be better. As the world races toward electric transportation and renewable energy storage, battery technology represents one of the most critical industries of the next decade. By pooling their strengths, Malaysia and Indonesia are positioning Southeast Asia as a serious contender in the global battery market.

NMB Group announced several additional collaborations at the conference with companies including Montavista Energy Technologies, Axium Industries, and Arya Energy, suggesting this is just the beginning of the region's battery ambitions.

Two countries, one battery, and a blueprint for how neighbors can build the future together.
