Malta and Turkey Launch 5 Cross-Border Research Projects

Two Mediterranean neighbors are joining forces to tackle some of their biggest challenges, from clean water to better healthcare.

Malta and Turkey officially launched five new joint research projects on July 28, 2026, bringing together scientists and innovators from both nations. The partnerships cover critical areas including aviation technology, healthcare solutions, water management systems, and sustainable farming practices.

The collaboration emerged from the 5th Xjenza Malta–TÜBİTAK Joint Call for Research and Innovation Proposals, which funds cross-border scientific cooperation. Researchers from Malta and Turkey will work side by side over the coming months, sharing expertise and resources to develop solutions that benefit both countries.

Three of the five projects are led by University of Malta researchers, while two come from Malta's private sector. WES TRADE Ltd and the Mediterranean Institute of Innovation, Communication and Technology are heading up the business-led initiatives, showcasing how scientific progress can bridge academia and industry.

At the kickoff meeting organized by Xjenza Malta, project leaders introduced their Turkish partners and outlined their research goals. They shared implementation plans and timelines, setting the stage for collaboration that could yield breakthroughs in fields affecting millions of people across the Mediterranean region.
