Man Saves Mom and 3 Kids From Submerged Florida Car

When Casey Curtis saw a car suddenly accelerate and flip into a canal in his rearview mirror, he didn't hesitate to turn around and help.

What he found on February 8 in Martin County, Florida, was a nightmare scenario. A vehicle had flipped upside down in the water with a mother and three children trapped inside. Body camera footage from the Martin County Sheriff's Office shows the chaotic moments that followed.

Curtis heard a child banging on the door, saying that mom's head was underwater. He forced open the door to find three kids standing in the flooding vehicle, staring at him in terror and asking for help.

After guiding all three children safely to land, Curtis rushed back for their mother. She was unconscious, her head submerged in the rising water.

"I lifted her head up out of the water and she wasn't breathing," Curtis told ABC News. "I just thought the only thing I could do was give her a breath. And as soon as I gave her a breath, she started breathing."

Curtis stayed at the scene coordinating with arriving officers until first responders could take over. Authorities later determined the crash happened because the mother suffered a seizure while driving, causing her to lose control of the vehicle.

The mother was taken to the hospital for treatment. All three children escaped with only minor injuries, a remarkably fortunate outcome given how quickly the situation could have turned tragic.

Why This Inspires

Curtis credits faith for guiding him through those critical moments. "I knew God had my back, you know? He was there helping me out the whole time," he said.

His actions show what's possible when someone chooses to get involved instead of driving past an emergency. In those few minutes before trained responders arrived, Curtis became exactly what those four people needed: someone willing to act when it mattered most.

The family is now recovering together, alive because a stranger decided their lives were worth stopping for.
