Marathon Legend Kipchoge Kicks Off World Tour in Cape Town

The greatest marathon runner of all time is bringing his world unity mission to Africa, and it starts in Cape Town this May.

Eliud Kipchoge, the two-time Olympic gold medalist who broke the two-hour marathon barrier, announced he'll compete in the 2026 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on May 24. It's the first race in his ambitious "Eliud's Running World" project, where he'll run a marathon on each continent over the next two years.

The timing couldn't be better for Cape Town organizers. Last year's race was canceled just hours before the start due to dangerous wind conditions, disappointing thousands of runners and delaying the event's bid to become Africa's first World Marathon Major. Kipchoge's presence brings immediate global credibility back to the race.

For Kipchoge, the choice is deeply personal. "Africa is where my journey as a runner began and where the foundation of my success is deeply rooted," he said. Remarkably, despite his legendary status, this will be his first official marathon on African soil.

The Ripple Effect

Kipchoge's project goes far beyond racing. At each continental stop, he'll meet with local running communities, inspire young athletes, and raise funds for his foundation focused on environmental preservation and education in underserved areas.

The Kenyan runner has spent his career redefining human limits. In 2019, he ran 42.2 kilometers in under two hours during a specially planned event in Vienna, proving what scientists thought impossible. He holds two Olympic golds and won 16 of his 25 career marathons.

Now at 41, Kipchoge is actually racing more than ever. He ran three marathons in 2025 and plans at least three this year. His goal isn't just winning anymore, it's using running as a universal language to connect people across borders and backgrounds.

Race CEO Clark Gardner called the announcement "incredibly powerful." Having the sport's greatest ambassador on Cape Town's streets will showcase both the city's marathon and Africa's rich running heritage to the world.

Kipchoge represents what happens when talent meets purpose, and his message is simple: keep moving, stay healthy, and remember that running can unite us all.
