Massachusetts Completes Major Offshore Wind Farm

Offshore construction wrapped up Friday night on Vineyard Wind, a massive wind farm 15 miles south of Martha's Vineyard that will bring clean electricity to hundreds of thousands of Massachusetts homes.

The project reached a major milestone with the installation of its final turbine blades. This makes it the largest commercial offshore wind farm completed in the United States.

Vineyard Wind's 62 turbines will generate 800 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 400,000 homes. The project has already been sending power to Massachusetts residents for over a year as individual turbines came online.

The completion comes after a challenging journey that started way back in 2017. Massachusetts committed early to offshore wind energy, requiring utilities to bring 1,600 megawatts of wind power online by 2027.

Federal regulators delayed the project in 2019 by holding off on a crucial environmental impact statement. Construction finally began in 2021 after new approvals came through, with work starting onshore in Barnstable, Massachusetts.

The project faced another obstacle when construction halted last December over national security concerns. Developers and state officials sued, and federal judges allowed work to resume after finding no imminent security threat.

The Ripple Effect

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell says completing Vineyard Wind will help the state lower electricity costs while meeting rising energy demand. The project also supports thousands of well-paying jobs in the clean energy sector.

This week brought even more good news for New England's clean energy future. Revolution Wind, another major offshore project, began delivering power to the regional electric grid for the first time on Friday and will ramp up to full operation in coming weeks.

Together, these projects represent a huge leap forward for American offshore wind development. Before Vineyard Wind, the only commercial-scale offshore wind farm in the country was South Fork Wind, a 12-turbine project that opened in March 2024 off New York.

The completion proves that large-scale offshore wind is now a reality in the United States, bringing reliable clean energy to hundreds of thousands of homes across New England.
