Maui Gets $3.2M Fast-Charging Hub at Kapalua Airport

Electric vehicle drivers on Maui just got a powerful new reason to feel confident about their next road trip.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation opened a state-of-the-art charging station at Kapalua Airport on May 13, featuring four 150-kilowatt fast chargers that can power up any electric vehicle on the market. The $3.2 million facility runs around the clock in the airport parking lot, joining two similar stations already serving drivers in Kahului and Honolulu.

Here's something clever: the charging rates actually drop during daytime hours. Drivers pay 44 cents per kilowatt-hour from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., when solar panels are generating the most power, then 57 cents per kilowatt-hour at night when the grid relies more on traditional sources.

The station offers connectors for every major electric vehicle type, including the newest North American Charging Standard that Tesla pioneered. Two chargers handle CCS and NACS connections, while the other two work with CCS and CHAdeMO plugs, ensuring no driver gets left behind.

This West Maui location marks the third station in Hawaii's ambitious plan to build 11 charging hubs across the islands. The network comes through federal funding designed to help America lead the global shift to electric transportation while cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The numbers tell an encouraging story about how quickly Hawaii is embracing this change. The two existing stations in Kahului and Honolulu have already powered more than 53,100 charging sessions, delivering nearly 1.9 million kilowatt-hours of electricity since opening.

The Ripple Effect

Those charging sessions translate into real environmental progress. The stations have prevented roughly 1.2 million kilograms of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere, equivalent to the carbon-cleaning work of 34,144 trees.

Eight more charging stations are coming to locations across Kauai, Oahu, and the Big Island. A fourth facility at Princeville Library on Kauai is already under construction and scheduled to open in December 2026, with designers currently planning sites everywhere from Hilo to Ocean View.

Transportation Director Ed Sniffen says the momentum reflects Hawaii's growing embrace of electric vehicles. "We are building the infrastructure needed to create a more sustainable and resilient transportation future," he noted at the dedication ceremony, where community leaders gathered to celebrate another step toward the state's clean energy goals.
