Memphis Needs Summer Volunteers at 10+ Great Causes

Summer break has arrived in Memphis, and the community is ready to welcome helpers with open arms.

Over 10 local organizations need volunteers right now, offering everything from low-stress animal cuddles to hands-on conservation work. Whether you're a student clocking service hours or an adult looking to give back, Memphis has a spot waiting for you.

Animal lovers can choose from four different shelters desperate for help. At Collierville Animal Services, volunteers spend time cuddling cats, walking dogs, and even writing animal biographies. Shelter employee Ella Cox says even one dog walker makes a dramatic difference. "We have an elderly volunteer who comes and walks one dog, and the weight it takes off of us is dramatic," she explains.

Memphis Animal Services, Memphis Humane Society, and Spay Memphis all need similar support. Tasks range from organizing field trips for dogs to cleaning surgical instruments.

The Front Porch, an East Memphis café, needs hospitality hosts to greet guests and explain their unique "wind phone." The disconnected rotary phone lets visitors "call" lost loved ones as a way to process grief. It's the only one in West Tennessee.

The Mid-South Food Bank distributes 2.5 million meals per month and relies heavily on volunteers for packing, sorting, and managing distributions. Several soup kitchens across Memphis also serve meals with volunteer crews, including locations downtown, in Crosstown, and the Medical District.

Memphis Rox, a nonprofit climbing gym, teaches volunteers to power wash climbing holds. The organization also runs community cleanups and tutoring programs for local students.

The Hospitality Hub fights homelessness with volunteer support in administration, wellness activities like yoga, meal service, and job readiness training. Memphis Museum of Science and History needs nature lovers to maintain trails and remove invasive plants at Lichterman Nature Center, while museum buffs can engage visitors at the Pink Palace.

Memphis Botanic Garden welcomes volunteers as young as 13 for Mudpie Mondays, a family activity exactly as fun as it sounds. Teens 16 and up can help with Play-and-Learn programs teaching kids about nature through planting and crafts.
