Mexico City Opens First Cat Museum in Latin America

Cat lovers in Mexico City now have a new destination that's equal parts adorable and educational. The Museo del Gato opened its doors in August on the famous Paseo de la Reforma, transforming years of feline fascination into an immersive experience.

The museum's story started back in 2015 when founders Esther Garcilita and Marco Sotomayor opened La Gatería, Latin America's first cat café. For nearly a decade, visitors sipped coffee alongside friendly felines while learning to appreciate these often misunderstood animals.

Now that concept has evolved into something much bigger. The new museum features three themed rooms exploring cat history, feline communication, and the special bond between cats and humans.

This isn't your typical quiet museum with artifacts behind glass. Visitors encounter gigantic animatronic cats, projection mapping that brings walls to life, and a virtual reality simulator offering a cat's-eye view of the world. A calico cat named Sissi serves as the official mascot, guiding guests through their journey.

The museum celebrates Mexico's rich feline history, from the cats roaming Palacio Nacional to the beloved companions of intellectuals like Elena Poniatowska and Carlos Monsiváis. These creatures have quietly shaped Mexican culture for generations.

The Ripple Effect

The museum does more than entertain. Every ticket purchased helps fund a mobile spay and neuter unit for Mexico City's stray cats and dogs, offering a humane solution to the street animal population.

The museum limits entry to 60 people per hour, ensuring each visitor gets a personal experience. Tickets range from 350 to 385 pesos (roughly $18 to $20 USD) depending on the day.

Mexico City now joins a small group of global destinations celebrating humanity's enduring love affair with cats, proving that museums can be both fun and purposeful.
