Miami Cancer Survivors Reunite With Care Teams at Event

Imagine walking into an arcade and seeing dozens of kids laughing, playing games, and celebrating life instead of sitting in hospital beds receiving chemotherapy.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital made that happen Sunday at Dave & Buster's in Miami's Dolphin Mall. The hospital brought together pediatric cancer survivors for a joyful reunion celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day.

Young survivors like Jazlyn Jimenez reflected on what the gathering meant. "If you weren't a survivor, you would probably not be here, so it makes me happy that we're all survivors," she told reporters.

The event created a completely different atmosphere than hospital visits. Instead of medical appointments and treatments, former patients played arcade games, shared meals, and reconnected with the doctors and nurses who guided them through their toughest battles.

Dr. Ziad Khatib, director of the division of hematology at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, captured the emotion perfectly. "It's wonderful to see the patients here smiling, having fun, and not getting chemotherapy, and so it's a happy day," he said.

The hospital deliberately chose a fun, relaxed venue to give families a break from the stress that comes with cancer treatment. For many attendees, it was a chance to see their care teams in a new light and celebrate how far they've come.
