Zack Loud of Farmington, Minnesota never expected to wake up one day and discover he was already a Canadian citizen. But that's exactly what happened when Canada's new citizenship law took effect in December.

Under the law, descendants of Canadians are automatically considered citizens, even if they've never set foot in the country. For Loud, whose grandmother is Canadian, it meant he and his siblings suddenly had dual citizenship waiting to be claimed.

"My wife and I were already talking about potentially looking at jobs outside the country, but citizenship pushed Canada way up on our list," Loud said.

Since December 15, immigration lawyers on both sides of the border have been overwhelmed. Nicholas Berning, an immigration lawyer at Boundary Bay Law in Bellingham, Washington, said his practice is "pretty much flooded with this."

Applicants must provide proof of their Canadian ancestry to obtain an official citizenship certificate. But once verified, they gain all the rights of Canadian citizens, including the ability to live and work in Canada without restrictions.
