Minnesota Opens $41M to Expand EV Charging Across State

Minnesota just made its biggest investment yet in electric vehicle charging stations, and it couldn't come at a better time for the state's growing community of EV drivers.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced over $41 million in new funding to expand fast-charging stations across the state. The investment targets rural areas where drivers often worry about running out of power on long trips.

The timing makes sense. Minnesota has seen electric vehicle registrations skyrocket by 1,000 percent since 2018. What started as roughly 9,000 EVs on the road has grown to 90,000 today.

This marks the state's third and largest funding round through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. Previous rounds awarded more than $16 million to support 24 charging sites along major highways like I-94, I-35, and I-90 in Southeast Minnesota. Eight of those stations are already serving drivers.

The new $41.2 million pot represents a significant step up. It focuses on bringing fast-charging technology to Greater Minnesota, the rural regions outside the Twin Cities metro area where charging options remain sparse.

Fast charging matters because it cuts wait times dramatically compared to standard chargers. Drivers can add substantial range in minutes rather than hours, making electric vehicles practical for road trips and daily commutes alike.

The Ripple Effect

This infrastructure buildout does more than ease range anxiety. It signals to Minnesotans considering an electric vehicle that the state is serious about supporting their choice.

Every new charging station makes EV ownership more viable for people in smaller towns and rural communities. It levels the playing field between urban and rural drivers who want cleaner transportation options.

The investment also opens doors for both public agencies and private companies to participate. Applications are open until November 2, 2026, giving interested parties plenty of time to develop proposals.

As Minnesota's EV community grows, this charging network will grow with it, creating the backbone for another decade of clean transportation progress.
