Mizoram Signs Peace Deal, Ending Decades of Insurgency

Peace has finally come to Mizoram after three decades of conflict, as the state government signed a historic accord with the last active insurgent group on April 15.

The Mizoram government and the Hmar People's Convention (Democratic) signed the peace agreement in Sakawrda, officially ending the final chapter of insurgency in the northeastern Indian state. Led by Lalhmingthanga Sanate, 43 fighters will lay down their weapons and return to civilian life at a homecoming ceremony scheduled for April 30.

The agreement goes beyond just ending violence. It promises real change for the Hmar-dominated Sinlung Hills Council region through increased funding, better infrastructure, and improved roads and connectivity throughout northern Mizoram.

For the Hmar community, the deal brings something they've fought for since 1996: official recognition. The government will now recognize Sikpui Ruoi, the largest Hmar festival celebrated each December 5, as an important cultural celebration.

Sanate acknowledged the long road his community traveled, admitting the agreement doesn't fulfill every original demand. But he called it a positive step toward mutual understanding after years of armed struggle.

The Ripple Effect

This wasn't Mizoram's first attempt at peace. The state had previously signed agreements with other Hmar militant groups in 1994 and 2018, but this final accord completes the puzzle.

Home Secretary David Lalithantluanga emphasized that addressing the root causes of conflict makes all the difference. Without development and opportunity, unrest festers and grows.

State official Lalmuanpuia Punte called the deal a milestone that signals the complete end of ethnic insurgency in Mizoram. His message was clear: when communities feel heard and see genuine investment in their future, violence loses its appeal.

The agreement includes establishing new educational institutions, shifting administrative control to local authorities, and creating a special development package tailored to Hmar needs. These aren't empty promises but detailed commitments with funding attached.

For over three decades, families in Mizoram lived with the uncertainty and fear that comes with ongoing conflict. Now, 43 former fighters get to go home, and an entire community can focus on building instead of battling.

This peace deal proves that even the longest conflicts can end when both sides choose dialogue over division and development over demands.
