Morocco Jumps 20 Spots in Global Peace Index

Morocco just made one of the biggest jumps in the 2026 Global Peace Index, rising 20 spots to 65th place worldwide and claiming the top position across the entire Maghreb region.

The Institute for Economics and Peace released its annual ranking covering 99.7 percent of the world's population. Morocco scored 1.895 points, earning a "high" peacefulness rating and outpacing regional neighbors Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, and Libya.

The index evaluates 23 different indicators measuring safety, security, internal and external conflict, and militarization levels. Morocco's climb from 85th place marks a remarkable turnaround in just one year.

Beyond leading North Africa, Morocco placed seventh across the entire African continent. Only island nations Mauritius and Madagascar and countries like Botswana and Namibia ranked higher on the continent.

In the Arab world, Morocco secured fourth place behind Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman. The country also outranked Jordan, which placed fifth among Arab nations.

The improvement stands out even more against a troubling global backdrop. The index recorded its 12th straight year of declining peace worldwide, with 99 countries becoming less peaceful while only 62 improved.

Iceland kept its crown as the world's most peaceful country, a title it has held since 2008. New Zealand, Switzerland, and Slovenia rounded out the top four spots globally.
