Namibia Invests $55M in New Hospital for Windhoek Residents

😊 Feel Good

Namibia's Development Bank is funding a 500-bed hospital in Windhoek's Havana district to ease critical bed shortages and bring healthcare closer to home. The project is part of a nationwide push to strengthen the country's healthcare system.

Residents of Havana, Namibia no longer need to travel long distances for medical care, thanks to a $55 million investment in their community's first district hospital.

The Development Bank of Namibia has allocated N$1 billion (approximately $55 million USD) to build a 500-bed hospital on the outskirts of Havana in the Khomas region. The facility will tackle critical bed shortages and reduce pressure on overcrowded referral hospitals across the area.

"This investment demonstrates the power of coordinated financing in addressing national priorities while ensuring a holistic approach to healthcare delivery that will have a lasting impact on our communities," says DBN Chief Executive Titus Ndove.

The new hospital forms part of Namibia's Sixth National Development Plan, a government roadmap designed to deliver integrated, high-quality healthcare services across the country. The Ministry of Finance is leading the initiative in partnership with the National Planning Commission and the Ministry of Health and Social Services.

The Ripple Effect

This funding extends beyond Windhoek. The Development Bank is simultaneously supporting district hospital construction in Nkurenkuru, Otjiwarongo, and Ondangwa, strengthening healthcare infrastructure nationwide.

Jerome Mutumba, DBN's chief marketing and corporate affairs officer, says the investment will spark economic growth through construction jobs, local procurement, and improved community health. By deploying capital into development-oriented assets, the bank is optimizing its resources while addressing real community needs.

The hospital was originally scheduled to begin construction in 2024, with the first phase completing in December 2025. Land clearing is now underway, and financial management processes are being finalized before construction begins.

Health ministry spokesperson Walters Kamaya confirms preparatory work is ongoing for all district hospitals receiving funding. Havana residents have welcomed the news, expressing relief that quality healthcare will soon be available closer to home instead of requiring long, often difficult journeys to distant facilities.

Better health, closer to home, for thousands of Namibians.
