NASA Launches 4 Astronauts to the Moon on April 1

Four astronauts are heading to the moon tomorrow, and NASA test director Jeff Spaulding has one request: no pranks, please.

The space agency is launching its Artemis 2 mission on April 1 at 6:24 p.m. EDT from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen will circle the moon on a 10-day journey, the first time humans have traveled beyond Earth orbit since 1972.

The timing might seem like cosmic comedy, but this launch is deadly serious. It's the first crewed test of NASA's powerful Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, paving the way for astronauts to land on the moon again in 2028.

Weather is cooperating with an 80% chance of good launch conditions. The countdown clock is already ticking, and the preparation has been remarkably smooth compared to the technical hiccups that plagued the uncrewed Artemis 1 test flight in 2022.
