NASA Orders 6 More SpaceX Missions Through 2030

NASA just locked in America's ride to space for the next six years, and it's all aboard SpaceX.

The space agency announced plans to add six more crew missions to SpaceX's contract, extending coverage through late 2030 when the International Space Station is scheduled for retirement. NASA will order up to three of those missions immediately to start formal preparations.

This marks the second major contract extension for SpaceX since 2022, when NASA added five missions worth $1.4 billion. The new missions will cover three years of operations at one launch every six months.

SpaceX remains NASA's only certified crew transportation system for reaching the ISS. The Crew-12 mission is currently docked at the station, continuing an unbroken streak of successful flights.

The decision comes as NASA works to maximize the station's productivity in its final years. The agency recently decided to keep crew rotations at six months instead of extending them to eight months, ensuring more astronauts can work aboard the orbiting laboratory before it retires.

With currently contracted missions running through Crew-14 in fall 2027, the extension fills the gap to 2030. NASA plans for the final crewed mission to spend a full year at the station, marking the end of an era that began with the first module launch in 1998.
