NASA's Artemis II Crew Returns Safely After 9-Day Moon Trip

For the first time since 1972, astronauts have traveled to the Moon and returned home safely, marking a giant leap forward in humanity's journey back to space.

The Artemis II crew splashed down off the coast of San Diego at 8:07 pm ET on April 10, 2026, completing a historic nine-day mission that took them 694,481 miles around the Moon and back. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen emerged from their Orion capsule in great shape, smiling and waving just two hours after landing.

"America is back in the business of sending astronauts to the Moon and bringing them home safely," declared NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman from the recovery ship. The 43-year-old administrator, who watched the crew land safely, said his childhood self couldn't believe what he was witnessing.

The mission wasn't without its nail-biting moments. Engineers held their breath during the six-minute communications blackout as the capsule reentered Earth's atmosphere at scorching temperatures. The heat shield had been a major concern after unexpected issues during an earlier test flight, but the team's decision to use a different reentry profile paid off perfectly.

President Trump called to congratulate the team and hinted at Mars as the next destination. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney celebrated his country's first astronaut to fly to the Moon. Even the Empire State Building lit up in red, white, and blue to mark the occasion.

The Ripple Effect

This mission represents more than just four people going to space. Thousands of engineers, scientists, and workers across multiple countries spent years building the technology that made this journey possible. The European Space Agency contributed Orion's Service Module, and Canadian expertise helped navigate the crew safely home.

The success proves that international cooperation can achieve extraordinary things. NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya captured the moment perfectly: "Fifty three years ago, humanity left the Moon. This time we return to stay."

Engineers are already analyzing two minor issues with the toilet's venting system and a helium valve to fix before the next mission. NASA plans to accelerate its Artemis program, with Artemis III scheduled for next year as an Earth orbit test flight before eventually landing humans on the lunar surface.

The mission carried special significance beyond the technology. Victor Glover became the first Black astronaut to travel to the Moon, while Christina Koch added to her record as a pioneering woman in space exploration.

The path forward looks bright, with plans not just to visit the Moon again but to build a sustainable presence there that will serve as a stepping stone for future Mars missions.
