Nashville Airport Could Be Renamed for Dolly Parton

When travelers land in Nashville, they might soon be greeted by the name of Tennessee's most beloved daughter.

Governor Bill Lee announced Friday his proposal to rename Nashville International Airport after Dolly Parton, the country music legend who passed away Tuesday at age 80 after battling cancer. The idea honors a woman whose warmth, talent, and giving spirit made her a global icon while staying true to her Tennessee roots.

"At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state's favorite daughter," Lee said in his statement. He's already begun discussions with Parton's representatives about the tribute.

The governor isn't alone in this vision. More than 157,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the name change, with tens of thousands adding their signatures since Parton's passing. Tennessee state Representative Todd Warner and singer Sheryl Crow have thrown their support behind the effort too.

Born in poverty in the Great Smoky Mountains, Parton rose to become an entertainer whose appeal crossed every boundary imaginable. She wrote timeless hits like "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You," starred in beloved films like "9 to 5" and "Steel Magnolias," and used her success to lift others through countless charitable acts.

The airport already celebrates Music City's heritage with outposts from the Country Music Hall of Fame and live performances from the Grand Ole Opry. Adding Parton's name would honor someone who embodied that musical legacy while representing so much more.

The Ripple Effect

This tribute reflects how Parton's impact extended far beyond entertainment. Her literacy program has given millions of books to children. Her generosity funded COVID vaccine research. Her kindness touched everyone she met, from fellow stars to everyday fans.

If approved, Nashville would join other American airports named for cultural icons, including Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. Each name tells visitors something about the city's heart and values.

The Metro Nashville Airport Authority will discuss the proposal at their September 17 meeting. Current policy requires waiting two years after someone's death before naming airport properties in their honor, but the board could revisit that guideline.

Tennessee lawmakers are considering other tributes too, including designating September 25 as "9 to 5" Day in honor of Parton's famous working anthem.

Millions of travelers passing through Nashville each year would carry Dolly's legacy of kindness forward with them.
