The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics partnered with the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization to create chickpeas specifically designed for Africa's toughest growing conditions. Dr. James Mwololo leads the breeding project and sees the impact firsthand. Right now, Malawi farmers harvest about 800 kilograms of chickpeas per hectare, but these improved varieties can produce up to 3 tonnes on that same land. That's nearly four times more food and income from the same effort.
The timing couldn't be better. Global trade disruptions have sent fertilizer prices soaring, putting traditional farming out of reach for many African families. Chickpeas naturally need less nitrogen fertilizer, which means farmers can grow more food while spending less money on inputs they can barely afford.

Gloria Pekani runs Milele Agro-processors in Malawi and says the market opportunities are exploding. Chickpeas store longer than many crops, work in dozens of traditional recipes, and create export opportunities that boost entire communities.
The Ripple Effect
The project expects to reach more than 66,000 farming households by 2027, up from 22,000 today. National chickpea production in Malawi alone could jump from 2,570 metric tonnes to over 7,700 tonnes in just five years.
Beyond the impressive numbers, families are eating better. In countries where childhood stunting remains a serious concern, these protein-packed chickpeas deliver nutrition that struggling parents desperately need for their kids.
Zimbabwe faces cereal deficits in low-rainfall regions until at least 2027, according to early warning systems. For farmers there and across southern Africa, crops that laugh at drought aren't just convenient. They're survival.
Dr. Himanshu Pathak, director general of ICRISAT, points out that resilient legume crops are becoming essential as climate pressures mount. When the rains don't come and fertilizer costs keep climbing, farmers need options that actually work in the real conditions they face.
