New Zealand Hits 500 EV Chargers, 900 More Coming

Charging an electric vehicle in New Zealand just got a whole lot easier, and the country's EV revolution is picking up speed.

Meridian Energy has officially opened its 500th public EV charging point across New Zealand, marking a huge win for drivers who've long worried about running out of juice on longer trips. The milestone comes just seven months after the company had only 380 charging stations, showing how quickly the network is growing.

The charging points now span from city centers to remote regional routes, filling critical gaps that once made electric road trips stressful. In recent months alone, 18 new stations opened in May 2026 at locations including Haast, Mossburn, Punakaiki, and Tokoroa, with 120 total new chargers since November.

Richard Sandford, Meridian's head of energy, says the company isn't stopping there. They're committed to adding 900 more public charging points by 2030, which would create New Zealand's largest EV charging network.

The expansion comes at a perfect time. New Zealand currently has about 80 EVs competing for each charging point, while the global average is just 11 vehicles per charger. That gap has created real anxiety for potential EV buyers wondering if they'll get stranded.

The timing is also driving unprecedented interest in electric vehicles. Since December 2025, weekly users of Meridian's charging network jumped 75 percent, while new app registrations grew 70 percent. Sandford points to ongoing global fuel supply uncertainty, particularly related to conflict in Iran, as sharpening public awareness about fuel security.

The Ripple Effect

This charging network expansion is doing more than just powering cars. It's giving New Zealanders confidence to make the switch to electric, knowing they can actually travel the country without stress.

The South Island saw massive improvements over the past year, and now Meridian is focusing on the central and upper North Island. Potential locations are already identified in Manawatu, Hawke's Bay, Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Auckland, and Northland, creating a truly connected national network.

For every new charging station that opens, more families can imagine taking their electric car on that holiday road trip they've been planning.

By 2030, New Zealand's EV charging landscape will look completely different, making clean transportation accessible to everyone across the country.
