New Zealand Pays Students to Train for Manufacturing Jobs

Getting paid to learn a skilled trade while still in school sounds too good to be true, but that's exactly what's happening across New Zealand.

The country's "Earn as You Learn" program is expanding to four new regions after its wildly successful pilot in Waikato. Students combine classroom learning with real factory experience, earning money while they decide their career path. Most importantly, the majority of the first graduates now have full-time manufacturing jobs.

"What makes Earn as You Learn unique is its rotational model," says Small Business and Manufacturing Minister Cameron Brewer. Students experience different manufacturing environments before committing to a specific career. They work alongside mentors while completing a Level 3 manufacturing certificate, all while getting paid.

Quinn, one of the first graduates, now works full time at APL Manufacturing in Cambridge. He represents the program's promise: young people gaining real skills and landing stable careers in an industry desperately seeking workers.

Manufacturing employs more than 220,000 New Zealanders and drives economic recovery. But factory owners consistently report that finding skilled workers is their biggest challenge. This program offers a practical solution created by manufacturers themselves through Advancing Manufacturing Aotearoa.

Starting in February 2027, around 20 students in each of four regions will join the program. The Hutt Valley, Bay of Plenty, Christchurch, and Auckland are all welcoming their first cohorts. More regions will follow as the program continues expanding.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't happening in isolation. New Zealand is making a serious commitment to hands-on career training across the board.

The government is adding 10,000 trades academy places by 2030, bringing the total to over 20,000 spots. Another 1,000 Youth Guarantee places offer free learning to young people with few qualifications. Together, these programs represent over $150 million in investment.

Modern manufacturing isn't your grandfather's factory floor anymore. Today's manufacturers work with cutting-edge technology, automation, and innovation. These are highly skilled, well-paying careers, but many young people don't realize these opportunities exist when planning their futures.

The program represents something rare: manufacturers, educators, and government actually working together effectively. Industry leaders identified the problem, designed the solution, and partnered with local education providers to make it happen.

By 2027, interested students, schools, and manufacturers can all get involved in building this pipeline of skilled workers that New Zealand's manufacturing success depends on.
