The technology works like having thousands of extra scouts watching every play. Computer vision systems track players during college games to create data comparable to what NFL teams get from professional tracking devices.

Minnesota Vikings interim GM Rob Brzezinski sees AI as the next evolution beyond traditional analytics. "Analytics allowed us to gather so much information," he said. "The interesting thing about AI is that it analyzes, too. So it's a different level."

Microsoft partnered with the NFL to create an internal platform where teams can ask questions in plain English. Instead of writing complex code, scouts can type "How fast is Caleb Downs?" and get instant answers backed by years of combine data and film analysis.

The technology helps teams match players to their specific systems. When evaluating top edge rushers like Ohio State's Arvell Reese and Miami's Rueben Bain Jr., AI revealed that Reese dropped into coverage on half his snaps last season. That insight helps teams plan how they'd actually use him.

Unlike fears that AI will replace human jobs, NFL teams are using it to enhance scout expertise rather than eliminate it. The technology handles the time-consuming number crunching while humans make the final calls on talent.

Karim Kassam, a former front office analytics executive, notes that AI doesn't change whether teams like a player. It helps them optimize how they'll use that player's specific talents.

Teams access some AI tools the same way everyone else does through chat boxes and simple questions. Monica Robbins from Microsoft explains that the goal isn't making decisions for teams. "It's just giving them the information they need," she said.

The shift mirrors how teams gradually embraced analytics over the past two decades. What started with basic statistics evolved into sophisticated data systems. Now AI is taking that foundation and adding instant analysis.
