Nigeria Brings Cash Aid to 780,000 in Ondo State

Nigeria is bringing its poverty relief program straight to people's doorsteps, and hundreds of thousands of families are seeing real help arrive.

The Federal Government's cash transfer program has reached 780,408 people across Ondo State through a system designed to put money directly into the hands of vulnerable households. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Dr. Bernard Doro visited the Ibule Community this week to meet with beneficiaries face to face, marking a shift from distant policy-making to hands-on community engagement.

"It is not enough to design policies from afar; we must come to the communities, listen to the people, and ensure that what we are doing is truly making a difference in their lives," Doro told participants at the gathering. The visit included conversations in local dialects with community leaders helping to translate, ensuring everyone could share their experiences.

The Household Prosperity and Empowerment Cash Transfer Program has delivered aid in three waves, with 173,424 beneficiaries in the first round, 110,446 in the second, and 107,704 in the third. The numbers vary as the government validates recipients using National Identification Numbers to ensure fairness and prevent fraud.

The program is completely free, and officials are warning beneficiaries to report anyone demanding payment. "Anyone demanding money is engaging in fraud," Doro said, directing people to use the toll-free 969 line on MTN to report extortion attempts.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about handing out cash. The program represents a fundamental shift toward structured, transparent social protection that creates real pathways out of poverty for families who need it most.

Local officials are seeing the transformation up close. Yemi Perisola, representing Ondo State's Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, described the initiative as restoring confidence in governance while giving vulnerable households tools to rebuild their lives through a system they can trust.

The government is building a coordinated social protection system designed to deliver sustainable outcomes rather than fragmented support. Each community visit provides feedback that helps the program evolve, making it more responsive to the actual needs of the people it serves.
