Nigeria Chairs Key UN Peacekeeping Panel for 54th Time

Nigeria has been elected to lead the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations for an unprecedented 54th time, reinforcing its role as a powerhouse in global peacekeeping efforts.

Ambassador Syndoph Endoni, Nigeria's top diplomat at the UN, was chosen by acclamation to chair the committee known as C-34 at UN headquarters in New York. The vote came during the opening session of the 2026 meeting, with delegations from 147 countries celebrating Nigeria's continued leadership.

Nigeria has held this prestigious position continuously since 1972, a testament to its unwavering dedication to international peace. The country currently ranks as the world's 15th largest contributor of troops to UN peacekeeping missions and eighth in Africa.

The committee Nigeria leads isn't just another UN body. It's the only committee with the mandate to review every aspect of UN peacekeeping operations worldwide, making recommendations that affect more than 100,000 military, police, and civilian personnel from 125 countries serving in 14 active missions.

Ambassador Endoni emphasized Nigeria's forward-thinking approach during his address to delegates. "Nigeria recognizes the growing importance of innovation and technology in modern peace operations," he said, pointing to data-driven decision-making and enhanced situational awareness tools as key to protecting peacekeepers and fulfilling their missions.

The diplomat made clear that Nigeria's commitment goes beyond just showing up. "We have consistently placed peace, unity, and dialogue at the core of our national identity and foreign policy," Endoni explained, pledging continued active contributions to peacekeeping efforts within Africa and beyond.

Nigeria's leadership reaches far beyond committee meetings. The country's peacekeepers serve in some of the world's most challenging conflict zones, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, the Central African Republic, and Lebanon.
